Fence nets with bait should not exceed 30 feet in length. Trawls, skimmer nets or butterfly nets cannot be used in closed water. No person shall use a double butterfly net that has an individual net frame of more than twelve feet measured horizontally or vertically, whichever is greater, each or a single stationary butterfly net that has an individual net frame of more than twenty-two feet measured horizontally or vertically, whichever is greater, except that people on board a vessel may use a double net with individual net frames of no more than sixteen feet measured horizontally or twelve feet measured vertically, each. A butterfly net can be mounted no more than twenty-four inches from the side of the container.
The operation of mosquito nets shall in no way prevent or restrict normal navigation. No person will use a double skimmer net with an opening that measures more than seventy-two feet in circumference for each net and a lead line of more than thirty-three feet. No person shall tie up individual skimmer nets to exceed the specifications contained in this paragraph or use any trawl in conjunction with a butterfly or skimmer. No person shall use a double foam net when the horizontal structure of the net extends more than six meters from the ship's edge.
The operation of skimmer networks will not prevent or restrict normal browsing in any way. Notwithstanding paragraph () of this subsection, which states otherwise, no person shall capture saltwater shrimp with a trawl, skimming net, or butterfly net with a mesh size of less than five-eighths of a square inch or a quarter of an inch stretched in inland waters during the fall coastal shrimp season, except in the inland waters of the state, from the Atchafalaya River in the west to the western coast of Vermilion. Bay and Southwest Pass on Marsh Island, with a mesh size of no less than three quarters of a square inch or an inch and a half stretched out, can be used in inland waters during the fall coastal shrimp season. No person should use sweeper devices, cables, extensions, wings, or other accessories together with or attached to butterfly nets.
For the purposes of this subsection, a stationary shrimp net is any net for catching shrimp, including a butterfly net or a skimmer net, that is attached to the bottom of the water, to the shore or to a fixed structure. A violation of this subsection will be a class one violation. Commercial fishing licenses are required to fish for these types of gear and other types of commercial gear that are not specifically authorized with recreational equipment licenses. In the state's legally defined saltwater areas, the basic fishing license can be used to fish for and maintain freshwater fish, but not saltwater species.
With just a few exceptions, all fishing activities in Louisiana require some type of license.
